Why I Rejected a House from Rawlings – Azumah Nelson Speaks Years On

Veteran Ghanaian International boxer and three times lightweight Champion Azumah Nelson has revealed that he rejected a house gift from the Late Former President of the Republic Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings.

The Ghanaian professional boxer noted that, the gift from the late Jerry John Rawlings was an honor the former President wanted to bestow on him for putting Ghana on the international map with his incredible talent and determination in the boxing ring.

“During Rawlings’ time he wanted to give me a house, he felt I have done a great job for the country but I told him no”, Azumah Nelson made this revelation in an interview with TV XZ monitored by MyNewsGH.com.

According to him, he rejected the gift because he was sure he could build one for himself and also offer the opportunity for people who did not have places to stay to be given what he rejected.

“I wanted to build one for myself. I rejected it because I knew I could build one for myself and again, I wanted him to give it to people who did not have houses”, Azumah Nelson revealed.

He was a two-weight world champion, having held the WBC featherweight title from 1984 to 1987 and the WBC super – featherweight title twice between 1988 and 1997.

He also challenged once for the unified WBC and IBF lightweight title in 1990. At regional level he held the ABU, and Commonwealth featherweight titles between 1980 and 1982. He is widely considered one of the greatest African boxers of all time.
