Water Tariffs To Shoot Up Effective From June 1

The price review comes after the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) approved new water tariffs to go up for the second quarter of 2023.

A statement issued by the PURC on Thursday, May 18. Said, “In taking this decision, the commission took cognizance of the cost of electricity, increased volume cost of chemicals for raw water treatment, the Ghana Cedi/US Dollar exchange rate, and inflation.”

“The Commission will continue to monitor the operations of the utility service providers to ensure value for money and quality service delivery,” it added.

PURC hiked electricity and natural gas tariffs by 18.36% overall for the same time period.

The decision was made, according to PURC, to balance the prevention of extended power outages and their negative consequences for jobs and livelihoods while limiting the impact of rate hikes on consumers.

The Quarterly Tariff Review Mechanism aims to track and reflect changes in important parameters affecting natural gas and electricity tariffs.
