98-year-old World War II Hero Joseph Ashitey Hammond pays visit to the High Commissioner of India to Ghana

The Joseph Ashitey Hammond Foundation paid a friendly visit to H.E. Ambassador Sugandh Rajaram, High Commissioner of India to Ghana on Wednesday, February 8 2023 at the office of the India High Commission in Ghana. The visit also served as an extension of continued friendship between the High Commissioner and the WWII Veteran, Wo1 Joseph Ashitey Hammond. During the visit, the 98-year-old WWII veteran presented a plaque of honour to H.E. Ambassador Sugandh Rajaram to celebrate his works in extending India’s international interventions to the various regions of the Republic of Ghana.

Wo1 Joseph Ashitey Hammond further expressed his gratitude to the Indian Commission for their continued support of his foundation and for the amazing things that India has been able to accomplish in the world regarding advancement in pharmaceuticals, and economic growth among other things. “India has done marvelously well, and I am very impressed with her growth” says Wo1 Joseph Ashitey Hammond who stated that although he is impressed with how far Ghana has come and the exciting things ahead, he, however, expressed sorrow on how different things could have been for Ghana.

Wo1 Joseph Ashitey Hammond added that coup d'état is one of the things which India has been able to stay away from and is one of the things which has retard the progress of Ghana (right from the overthrow of the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah). Wo1 Joseph Ashitey Hammond also mentioned that there are always peaceful ways to tackle National issues without the use of coup d'état in conflict resolutions.

It can be observed that during World World II, Wo1 Joseph Ashitey Hammond was deployed by the army to join the heavy fight, and while on duty, Hammond developed an eye infection and was sent to India for treatment, where he remained until the end of the war. Wo1 Joseph Ashitey Hammond returned home in December 1945, and was demobilized in January 1946 in the Gold Coast Regiment.

H.E. Ambassador Sugandh Rajaram, High Commissioner of India to Ghana received the plaque of honour presented to him by the Joseph Ashitey Hammond Foundation with gratitude and expressed delight in Wo1 Joseph Ashitey Hammond’s visit. He further mentioned his country’s continued support of the progress and development of Ghana and added that India has been able to make it this far due to many things including the support of different countries and the structure of their democracy, highlighting further on time and how their growth has been a gradual process.

The Joseph Ashitey Hammond Foundation which was launched in December 1, 2020 in Accra, Ghana thrives on the vision of promoting Peace and Conflict Resolution and creating awareness of activities that confront humanity and our environment, through Public events, Educational programs, Research studies, Local and International partnerships as well as Charity to unite hearts across all boundaries of Culture, Politics, and Religion.

The foundation also seeks to recognize and honor deserving profiled personalities who have served humanity with humility and have been peacekeepers and positive change-makers in Ghana. Additionally, Wo1 Joseph Ashitey Hammond is set to launch his biography at a later date which promises to dive deeper into his life and shared experiences.
