Falling Walls Lab Ghana 2023: A Showcase for Young Scientists, Innovators and Entrepreneurs from all disciplines in Ghana

The Falling Walls Lab Ghana is an annual event that brings together young scientists, innovators and entrepreneurs from all disciplines to their research and ideas.

This year, the event was held on May 26th at the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens, University of Ghana. The event was organized by the DAAD Information Centre Accra in collaboration with StartUp Lounge Africa with support from the Federal Foreign Office of Germany.

A total of 29 applications were received for this year's event. The submitted projects were from variety of fields, including agricultural science and farming, health, plastic recycling, Information technology, the fight against deforestation among others.

After review of the applications, 12 projects were shortlisted to present their ideas at the Falling Walls Lab Ghana 2023. At the Falling Walls Lab, each presenter had 3 minutes to present their idea to a jury. The presenters were also allowed to bring prototypes or use videos to help explain their ideas. Any idea was welcome, from a science innovation to a business solution to a social intervention.

The winner of the Falling Walls Lab Ghana 2023 is Maltiti Mohammed, a Ghanaian student from the University for Development Studies in Tamale. Maltiti's idea was to start a clothing and accessories company that relies solely on recycled plastics. In his prototype he melted and extruded plastic waste into filaments, and then twisted the filaments into yarn. This yarn could be used to make beautiful fabrics for clothing (such as T-shirts).

The German Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Daniel Krull was the guest of honour at the event. The 7-member jury for the competition was chaired by Mr. Tsonam Cleanse Akpeloo (CEO of Suku Technologies and Chairman of the Association of Ghana Industries, Greater Accra).

The Falling Walls Lab Ghana is a great opportunity for young scientists and entrepreneurs to showcase their research and ideas. The event provides a platform for these young people to connect with potential investors and partners, and to gain exposure to a wider audience.

Maltiti in his award, receives an all expense paid trip to Berlin this November to compete in the Falling Walls Lab finale; a world class event organized by the Falling Walls Foundation, Berlin, Germany and generously funded by Berlin’s Natural History Museum.
