Woman found breathing at funeral home after being pronounced dead at a New York care facility

A patient of an Iowa nursing facility was declared dead and placed in a body bag just a few weeks prior to the event, only to be discovered alive at the Ankeny Funeral Home and Crematory. An inquiry has been opened after an 82-year-old lady was declared dead at a nursing home in New York only to be discovered breathing at a funeral parlor three hours later.

At 11.15 on Saturday, the woman was reportedly declared deceased at the Water's Edge Rehab and Nursing Center in Port Jefferson, Long Island. The woman, whose identity has not been made public, was reportedly carried to the OB Davis Funeral Homes in Miller Place around 1:30 pm, according to Suffolk County police. At 2:09 PM, she was found breathing.

She was brought to a medical center. On Monday, there was no new information on her health. The health agency and state attorney general are conducting an investigation.

It happens just a few weeks after an Iowa care facility was fined $10,000 (£8,300) for a comparable incident. Authorities said that a 66-year-old lady was pronounced dead on January 3 at the Urbandale, Iowa, hospice facility Glen Oaks Alzheimer's Special Care Centre.

A corpse bag was used to transport the lady to the Ankeny Funeral Home and Crematory, where staff members discovered she was breathing and dialed 911.

She was sent back to the hospice, where she passed away on January 5.
