Daniel Kweku Botwe is a Ghanaian ICT specialist, politician, and member of the New Patriotic Party. He is a member of parliament for the Okere constituency in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
He served as Minister of Communications in the John Agyekum Kufour administration, the Minister for Regional Reorganization and Development in the Nana Akuffo Addo administration, and is the Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development in the the the Nana Akufo-Addo first and second government.
Dan Botwe was born on February 26, 1958, in the Eastern Region of Ghana. He is a product of the Presbyterian Primary and Middle Schools at Malang in the Ahafo-Ano of the Ashanti Region. He obtained a GCE Ordinary Level certificate at Kumasi Academy and a GCE Advanced Level certificate in 1977 from Achimota School. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
He was the national secretary of the National Union of Ghana Students from 1982 to 1983 while a student at KNUST. He was targeted as a troublemaker due to his activism and criticism of the ruling elite and was exiled to Ivory Coast together with some other Ghanaians. Upon his return, he worked as a computer analyst at the Ghana cocoa board from 1985 to 1993.
In 1998, he contested and won the New Patriotic Party General Secretary election and was very instrumental in the 2000s general elections for ex-president John Kufour as President of Ghana.
As a member of the party, he served as the Director of Operations and Research at the National Headquarters and the National Treasurer of the Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party.
On 22 December 2007, he contested for New Patriotic Party primaries for the flag bearer with 16 others contesting against him to find a replacement for John Agyekum Kufour. He lost the election to Nana Akufo-Addo.
He also succeeded Kwamina Bartels as the Minister for Information serving from 2006 to 2007.
In 2008 after the incumbent, Bradford Kwame Daniel Adu had decided to step down, he contested the parliamentary election as MP for Okere District. He obtained 11,974 votes out of the 19,684 total votes cast, representing 60.8% of the vote, to become the new member of parliament. He also won the 2012 and 2016 parliamentary elections.
President Akufo-Addo named Botwe as the Minister for the newly created Ministry of Regional Reorganization and Development in January 2017 as well as one of 19 ministers who would form his cabinet in May 2017.
The names of the 19 ministers were submitted to the Parliament of Ghana and announced by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Prof. Mike Ocquaye.
