Otumfour Does Not Need A Permit Or Exeat Like SHS Student To Enter Into Berekum, Lawyer Obiri Boahen

Nana Obiri Boahen has finally settled the debate between the Otumfour Osei Tutu II supremacy over the Dormaa chief as the Asantehene made headlines at the late Berekum Paramount Chief's final funeral rite in Berekum, Bono Region.

Whiles Nana Obiri Boahen was speaking on the programme 'State of Ghana' on Wontumi TV this morning, he mentioned Berekum as being part of the Asantehene's people who hails from Asokore in the Ashanti Region and that gives him the authority to storm the place and ensure a successful programme.

According Nana Obiri Boahen; "Otumfour does not need a permit or exeat like SHS student to enter Berekum. If you don't know the history of this country keep quite" he said. This does not end there but he revealed the history of how some places in Bono Region and Ahafo are still under the umbrella of the Ashanti kingdom.

"Japekrom people in Bono are from Ankaase in the Ashanti Region, Awuah Dumase originated from Bantama and even fought the Yaa Asantewaa war. Boahen Kokoo who founded Sunyani is from Amakom in the Ashanti Region, Seikwa people, Tuobodom, Nkoranza are all under the Ashanti Kingdom and this Ghanaians got to listen to history" Obiri Boahen said.

After the Gyamerewa war in 1818, the Ashanti's captured Techiman in the Bono East Region. Baffoe Adu Donyina emanated from Amakom so why those arguments?

When you look at the 100 VIP buses, over 200 V8 cars, the motorcades of Asantehene were more than every President in Ghana and this depicted how strong and magnificient the Ashanti Kingdom is.

The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, could not carry out his decision to attend the burial rites of the late Berekumhene, Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo II, at Berekum in the Bono Region.

This was after the Sunyani High Court, restrained him from attending the funeral on Thursday, November 23, 2023, since it could lead to a breach of the peace in the area.

The court order followed an application brought before the court by a member of the Berekum Traditional Council, Osabarima Kyere Yeboah Darteh II.

The Dormaahene decided to attend the burial rites on Thursday, the same day the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, was also attending the event.

Nananom in Berekum saw the position of the Dormaahene as something that could lead to the breach of the peace of the area and therefore sought legal action to prevent him from attending.

From the funeral arrangements released by the Berekum Traditional council, the Dormaahene and Members of the Bono Regional and National Houses of Chiefs, of which he is the President were to attend the burial rites on Wednesday, November 22 while the Asantehene, who is the overlord of Berekum, was to attend the burial on Thursday, November 23.

Traditionally, Otumfuo is the last person to attend the burial of a Berekumhene since the Berekumhene owes allegiance to the Golden Stool – Asanteman.

But, to the surprise of the Berekum Traditional Council, the Dormaahene rather decided to attend the funeral at the same time the Otumfuo would be attending, compelling the Berekum Traditional Council to seek legal means to stop him, and also prevent potential clashes, in view of recent developments between the Dormaahene and Asantehene.

Nana Obiri Boahen lastly explained the meaning of Berekum and how the Nsuatere people helped the Ashanti Kingdom. The Ashanti people who inhabited the Berekum township found it difficult to get an animal to hunt or kill and thus how come Berekum meaning difficult or suffer to kill became the name of that town.
