In the wake of last week’s communal clash in Wenchike, 10 suspects have been arrested by the police at Chereponi in the North-East Region.
According to reports, four people have lost their lives, and 25 houses were burnt down, including motorbikes and other properties.
The conflict is said to have occurred due to a chieftaincy disagreement between 2 Chokosi groups in the community.
The National Disaster Management Organization reported that more than 600 people have been forced to leave their homes following the violence. Schools are closed as residents of the community have left the town.
The District Chief Executive, Hajia Zuweiratu Nashiru, disclosed to JoyNews that the ten suspects were remanded for two weeks for reappearance in court. She assured that the suspects would be brought to justice if found guilty.
This unfortunate incident is said to have been triggered by the enskinment of a sub-chief by the Chief of Wenchike.
