General Yakubu Gowon, former head of state, urged politicians with cases before election petition tribunals to embrace the results in good faith yesterday.

Gowon, who insisted that only an independent Judiciary could safeguard the nation's democracy, recommended that the Judiciary be permitted to operate without external interference.

Gowon spoke at the 15th annual Punuka lecture honoring the late Justice Chike Idigbe, a former Supreme Court justice who passed away in 1983.

It is improper to swear in Tinubu and other governors with court cases — Onaiyekan.

Bishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, stated on Thursday that it makes no sense to swear individuals into office when there are pending court cases.

Onaiyekan stated this on the Channels television program Sunrise Daily.

Sen. Magnus Abe, the candidate for governor of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Rivers State, has stated that the relocation of the state's Election Petition Tribunal to Abuja was unavoidable because it would have been risky for opposition political parties to appear before the tribunal in the state capital.

Abe, speaking to the media yesterday in Port Harcourt, stated, "Anyone who has been following the events in Rivers can see that it was impossible for the tribunal to convene in Port Harcourt."

James Benjamin has been promoted by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to the position of Assistant Superintendent of Corrections I.

The officer was rewarded for the valor he exhibited during the break-in at the Medium Security Custody Centre in Kuje, Abuja, on July 5, 2022.

In a communication to the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Service Board, Controller General of Corrections Haliru Nababa recommended the promotion.
