Akufo - Addo was never committed to combating illicit mining, according to Sammy Gyamfi.

Sammy Gyamfi is the National Communication Officer for the NDC.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) asserts that President Nana Akufo-Addo was never devoted to fighting galamsey, also known as illegal mining.

The position of the opposition party comes at a time when the country's water bodies are more polluted than in previous years, and when illegal mining activities are increasing daily.

Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, responded to a galamsey report authored by former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng by stating that the report's revelations prove the party's claim that the government was never committed to fighting illegal mining.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, a former chairman of the now-defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining, accused prominent members of the Akufo-Addo administration of interfering in the struggle against illegal small-scale mining in his report.

He mentioned former senior minister Yaw Osafo Maafo, who is now a presidential advisor, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, and NPP leader Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko as individuals who interfered with his work.

Sammy Gyamfi, addressing the media during the 'Moment of Truth Series' at the NDC headquarters, argues that galamsey was destined to flourish under the NPP administration.

"Galamsey was destined to prosper under the corrupt Akufo-Addo-Bawumia regime because it was the central source for illegal gold purchases used in this complex money laundering scheme that Aljazeera exposed. This plot is being carried out against the state by extremely potent forces."

He added, "As the NDC has always maintained, President Akufo-Addo's assertion that he was combating galamsey was the greatest con ever perpetrated on Ghanaians. Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, has validated our long-held belief in a report that vindicates the NDC today. Akufo-Addo-Bawumia's administration has never made a sincere effort or commitment to combat galamsey. The aforementioned report demonstrates conclusively that the so-called fight against galamsey was a sham designed to allow senior government and NPP officials to appropriate and take over the illegal galamsey trade.
