Chris Hughton to be named Black Stars coach

Former Brighton and Hove Albion boss Chris Hughton is expected to be announced as the new Black Stars head coach by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) this week, footballghana.com understands.

The 64-year-old has served as the technical advisor of the Ghana national team since last year for the 2022 World Cup playoffs and the main tournament in Qatar.

He is, therefore, coming into a familiar territory, where expectations are very high after the disappointing performance at the Mundial in November and December.

Hughton beat competition from Manchester United assistant coach Stephen McClaren and Hector Cuper, who were also shortlisted for the vacant Ghana job.

The Ghana national team job has been vacant since Borussia Dortmund assistant coach Otto Addo stepped down after Ghana failed to progress from the group stage of the 2022 World Cup.

The England-born Ghanaian is expected to take charge of his first games as Ghana head coach when the Black Stars take on Angola in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in March.
