Christian Atsu was a Ghanaian top footballer who died in Antakya Turkey, following a tragic earthquake that struck Southeastern Turkey on February 6, 2023.

He was born on 10 January 1992 in Ada Foah, Ghana. He came from a humble origin. His father made a living out of fishing and also engaged in subsistent farming.

Atsu was born into a large nuclear family consisting of 10 children. He has a twin sister.

Christian Atsu was a former Ghana international, who plied his trade with Hatayspor, a Turkish Super Lig club, playing as a winger.

He started his football career with the Porto youth team in 2009. In 2013, he made his first senior club appearance for Porto and went on make 17 appearances for the club, scoring one goal.

During his three years spell with Porto, he was sent on loan to Rio Ave before joining Chelsea in 2013.

He failed to make a single appearance for the Blues throughout his stint at Stamford Bridge. He was sent on loan spells to Vitesse, Everton, Bournemouth, Malaga, and Newcastle United, where the loan move was made permanent in 2017.

He made 75 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 3 goals for the club.

In 2021, Christian Atsu left Newcastle United for Al-Raed, before joining Hatayspor in 2022. He made three appearances for Hatayspor and scored his first goal for the club, hours before the Turkish earthquake.

Atsu made his debut for Ghana national team in 2012 and had won 65 caps with the Black Stars, scoring 9 goals before calling time on his international career in 2019.

Christian Atsu was confirmed dead on February 18, 2023 after he was buried in a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Southeastern Turkey and Syria.

He was found death in Antakya, a week after the earthquake, after some of his Hatayspor teammates who were also trapped in the earthquake were rescued alive, including a staff.

There were reports he was found alive, but the report was later dismissed as false by his agent, who subsequently confirmed his death.

Christian Atsu died at the age of 31, after making three appearances for his new club, Hatayspor, and scoring his first goal for the club against Kasimpasa in the Turkish Super Lig.
