Dame's letter to A-G an indication that Akufo-Addo's gov't collaborates in corruption - Mahama

Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has expressed his disappointment in Ghana’s Attorney General over his letter to the Auditor General(A-G) for publishing its report on COVID-19 expenditure.

Godfred Dame in a letter to the Auditor General indicated it’s unconstitutional for the publication of the Auditor-General’s report on the COVID-19 expenditure before Parliament completes considering it.

“It ought to be pointed out that the functional independence of the Auditor-General under article 187(7)(a) of the Constitution does not confer immunity from legal advice.
Legal advice to a constitutional body cannot under any circumstance be construed to amount to interference with the performance of its constitutional functions.

A view to the contrary implies that an “independent constitutional body” has absolute freedom to act in any manner it desires, except when a court of law has ordered, even when its legal adviser (whether public or private) is of the opinion that its actions are in conflict with the law. This sounds in absurdity and is the product of unbridled sensationalism,” the A-G said.

Reacting to the letter, the former President expressed shock and disappointment indicating that it is a clear indication that the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led administration is not committed to the fight against corruption.

He suggested that recent events and happenings have pointed to the fact that the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government are just collaborators in corruption.

“The Attorney General’s letter to the Auditor General is clearly meant to silence him and create a conducive atmosphere for corruption to thrive. President @NAkufoAddo’s administration is not only indifferent in the fight against corruption – they are collaborators!”
