GNAT Calls For SHS Classification Review

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has urged the government to review the Senior High Schools (SHS) classification in Ghana.

According to the General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah, the current placement challenge is due to the grading of the schools into various categories.

Senior High Schools in Ghana are currently categorised from A to D, depending on their academic performance.

However, Mr Musah believes the categorisation must be reviewed to prevent associated challenges.

“If you classify one school as A, another as B and another as C, it creates the impression that the C schools are not good, and I think we must do away with the grades A, B, C and D [categorisation],” he said on Citi News.

Meanwhile, the Free SHS Secretariat has stated that all challenges confronting the Computerised School Selection Placement System (CSSPS) will be resolved.

Deputy Coordinator of the Free SHS Secretariat, Nana Afrah Sika Mensah, who gave the assurance, admonished parents to remain calm.

According to her, the Secretariat has set up several resolution centres across the country to help resolve issues of students who are yet to be placed in senior high schools.

According to the Ghana Education Service, 165,601 candidates will have to do self-placement because they could not be matched to their school of choice.

It said, “out of the 547,329 candidates who sat for the examination, 538,399 qualified for school placement. Out of these, 372,780 candidates have automatically been placed into various schools”.
