In light of the NHIS debacle, President Mahama has demanded the resignation of the health minister.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has demanded the resignation of the Minister of Health after he acknowledged the failure of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Kwaku Agyemang Manu asserts that the Scheme is ineffective, confessing that he no longer utilizes the service and prefers to pay for his medical care.

According to him, the treatment of NHIS cardholders at the various facilities is substandard, and patients who are unable to pay for medical services are denied access.

The former president said Mr. Agyemang Manu must resign in response to the minister's admission of failure.

"He himself has acknowledged his failure. He has been unable to expand the NHIS and deems it a failure. He has no right being the health minister. "He should resign," he continued.

At a meeting with branch and constituency executives of his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in Sefwi Adobokrom, Bia East Constituency, Mr. Mahama remarked to thunderous acclaim.

Mr. Mahama elaborated by stating that most health facilities are refusing to accept NHIS cards because the government is not paying their claims.

"Since last year, health facilities have not been compensated for services rendered to cardholders. How do you anticipate that they will continue to approach them?

Instead of assuming responsibility to make the Scheme functional, many have questioned the Minister's public complaint. In response to the minister's statement, a social media commentator stated, "he appears to be speaking as an outsider who is merely observing the situation without the ability to affect change within the system."

Who should be held accountable if the NHIS is not functioning as it once did? Mr. Mahama continued by reiterating that Mr. Kwaku Agyeman Manu must resign.

"It is inexcusable for a minister to merely observe from the sidelines. The Scheme's collapse occurred during his tenure and under his direction. Acceptance of the ineffectiveness of the system should be accompanied by a renunciation."
