"There is no need to pay money for a wooden plaque" - Great Ampong to fellow musicians
Since their inception, the selection criteria for the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) have received considerable criticism.
The general public, entertainment experts, and performers themselves are the most critical, alleging that certain individuals in the music industry have purchased awards.
The event's organizer, Charterhouse, has repeatedly refuted these allegations, emphasizing that the victors are selected through both voting and board decision.

Great Ampong, a gospel musician better known by his stage name Isaiah Kwadwo Apmong, has advised musicians who pay for awards to stop doing so, as it makes no difference.
The singer-songwriter added that the VGMA award is a wooden plaque and that it is free, as the recipient is not provided with sustenance.
"It is unnecessary to pay for a wooden plaque. Ours is at home and does not sustain us, so there is no need to purchase it.
