Lawlessness Erupts at The University Of Ghana

On the campus of the University of Ghana, Legon, a violent altercation between the students of Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah hall occurred late on Friday, August 5, and early on Saturday, August 6, 2022. Both private and public property was destroyed.

Residents of the Mensah Sarbah hall were celebrating their annual "Sarbahfest," according to an eye witness on the scene, and as part of the festivities, these students went on a procession known as a "jama/morale," in the local slang.

A Mensah Sarbah hall member accidentally entered the Commonwealth hall during the parade, when he was allegedly lynched and robbed by a number of other students.

The beaten Viking is said to have rushed to his hostel after this alleged incident to report what happened, summon help, and then begin a confrontation.

Since time immemorial, for grounds that are yet unclear, there hasn't been good ties between the two halls; as a result of the violent deed, both the state and private citizens lost resources.

Since then, the university has released a statement ordering all enrolled students to find alternate housing instead of residing in these halls. This change, which some students consider to be quite radical, prompted the filing of a judicial order against the school's "residential policy decision."

The Ghana Police and other security personnel engaged in a violent confrontation with irate students on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, who attempted to force their way into their separate halls. Due to this activity, the Ghana Police Service increased their personnel in order to ensure the smooth operation of academic activities. They also made 18 suspects who are allegedly connected to the forced entry attack under arrest.

Ransford Gyampo, a well-known professor at the University of Ghana, has lambasted the university's students who involved in the altercation with the police on February 14, 2023. "Some are saying the court has given an injunction thus they are going to enforce it, it is an act of lawlessness," he said in his statement on Tv3's Ghana Tonight Show.

The Student Representative Council is yet to make a comment about the unfortunate incident.
