Mahama commits to raising funds for Assemblies Of God 's centenary project

Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged his readiness to raise funds for the Assemblies of God Church to build a centenary village project to mark the church’s 100th anniversary in Ghana.

The church currently in its 91st year of ministry is looking forward to marking its centenary in 9 years.    It is against this background that the former president pledged to help raise the needed funds for the church to build an edifice to mark the its existence.

The former president who is also a member of the church made this pledge while speaking at the induction ceremony of Rev Stephen Wengam as the General Superintendent of the church in Accra.   He said: "Rev Wengam, send me anywhere if you want funds for the project."

He assured the leadership of the church of his preparedness in going to all lengths to raise funds to make the project a reality.

"I am ready and ever willing to help the church in this direction," Mr Mahama said.   He noted the need for the church to build an edifice to the glory of God.

He was hopeful the church’s project will rival that of the Church of Pentecost at Kasoa Millennium City in the Central Region

"I want to see an edifice more than that of the Pentecost project," he said.   Mr Mahama took the opportunity to commend the immediate past General Superintendent of the church, Rev Paul Frimpong Manso, for the construction of a befitting office complex.   "Now we have an office complex capable of holding any type of meeting," he noted.

He cautioned the church to be careful so that the centenary village project does not suffer the fate of the controversial National Cathedral project embarked on by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.   He called on the members of the church to show keen interest in the country's political activities.

According to him, when good people shy away from politics bad people will rule.

He stressed the need for the leadership of the church to speak truth to power and not only find their voice when a particular group of people are in power.

"The church must speak up when things are going wrong in the country," he urged.

In an acceptance speech, Rev Wengam commended his predecessor and promised to grow the church on the theme: 'Shift, Grow and Transform' to make the church prominent in the country.

He promised to work on the welfare of the needy and rural pastors of the church
