Mixed fuel pricing news for next week's gasoline and diesel price changes

It is still too early to predict with certainty what fuel prices will be in May. The outlook for gasoline is bleak, but the outlook for diesel is positive. Photo: Pixabay

It is too early to predict what fuel prices will be in May, but the most recent data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) does not bode well for unleaded car owners.

As of 24 April 2023, fluctuations in international commodity prices and rand weakness indicate the following under-recoveries (price increases) or over-recoveries (price decreases) for gasoline and diesel.

FuelPrice variationIncrease of 60 cents per litre for gasolineIncrease of 56 cents per litre for petrol 95Diesel 0.05% decrease, 54 cents per litre decreaseDiesel 0.005%decrease of 29 cents per litreDecrease of 32 cents per litre for Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale)

93 octane users can anticipate a price increase of 60 cents and 95 octane users can anticipate a price increase of 56 cents if current market conditions persist for the remainder of the month, which is highly unlikely given the fluctuating rand/dollar exchange rate and crude price.

Meanwhile, diesel drivers would see a decrease of between 29 and 54 cents per litre.

PRICES OF FUEL IN MZANSI ARE AFFECTED BY TWO PRIMARY FACTORS:

The international price of petroleum products, which is primarily influenced by crude prices

2. The rand-to-dollar exchange rate used to acquire these goods

Currency fluctuation

At the time of publication, the rand to dollar exchange rate was R18.24 per dollar.

Oil price

At the time of publication, a barrel of Brent crude oil costs $82.75.

In the coming weeks, the final aggregate price changes for both gasoline and diesel will be confirmed, with the new prices taking effect at midnight on Tuesday, May 2.

Mzansi, ease up on the gas pedal until then.
