Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu In Pole Position To Be Named Dapaah Successor

According to reports, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who serves as the Majority Leader in Parliament and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, is in a comfortable lead to succeed Cecilia Abena Dapaah as the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources. Two other candidates are also in the running for the position.

Francis Asenso Boakye, who is presently the Minister of Works and Housing, and Osei Bonsu Amoah, who is currently a Minister of State in Charge of Local Government and Decentralisation, are two of the other individuals that are rumoured to be candidates for the position.

However, according to certain reports, President Akufo-Addo is leaning towards trusting Kyei Mensah Bonsu to rebuild the image of the sector following the scandal involving Abena Dapaah.

Because the Suame Lawmaker filled in for Ken Ofori-Atta as Minister of Finance in 2021 when Ken Ofori-Atta was off sick, it would not be strange if the Suame Lawmaker were appointed to the position.

If Ken Ofori-Atta had been unable to continue in his role as substantive Finance Minister, many sources had indicated that Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu could have been nominated to fill the position instead.

Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu is now serving his final term as a Member of Parliament for the Suame Constituency. President Akufo-Addo has placed his faith in Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu to succeed Cecilia Abena Dapaah in the role of his representative for the strategic sector.

When President Akufo-Addo returns to Ghana from his trip to the Vatican, it is anticipated that he would have a conversation with the shortlist, which will include the Majority Leader. Appointing somebody who might not have to go through the appointments committee's screening process is one of the most important things the President needs to think about.

Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources in Ghana, resigned in the wake of a scandal involving many foreign and local currencies that are believed to have been stolen from her household by her househelps. This led to the discovery of the vaancy.

In her letter of resignation, which was sent to the President, Madam Dapaah explained that she had made the decision to stand down "because I do not want this matter to become a preoccupation of government and a hindrance to the work of government at such a crucial time."

It was revealed on Friday, July 21, that two house helpers of the Minister were facing charges before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly taking a sum totaling $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghanaian cedis from the former minister's mansion at Abelenkpe, Accra, in October 2022. The residence belonged to the former minister.

Patience Botwe, who was 18 years old at the time, and Sarah Agyei, who was 30 years old at the time, are accused of stealing the couple's money and personal belongings during the months of July and October of 2022.
