Ghana midfielder Mohammed Kudus avoided a booking out of benevolence following his tribute to Christian Atsu during the game between Ajax and Sparta Rotterdam.

The 22-year-old removed his jersey after scoring in the 4-0 win to pay his final respect to the late Ghana winger, who died following the earthquake in Turkey.

Kudus was supposed to be given a yellow card for his gesture, according to the rules of the game.

However, referee Pol van Boekel decided against booking the player as the world mourns Christian Atsu.

"We have football rules but this is beyond football, this is about life and death. The referee told me it's not allowed (shirt removal) but he understands because this is a bigger situation than football. A big respect from me to the referee," said Kudus after the game.

Atsu's body has arrived in Ghana ahead of preparations for his burial.

According to Ghana's vice president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia disclosed during the receiving of the player's remains that Atsu will be given a befitting burial.

“It is a very sad day that we are here to receive the remains of our brother, Christian Atsu. The earthquake that struck Turkey was devastating, and we prayed every day that passed for our brother to be found but when he was found, he was no more. I will like to take this opportunity on behalf of the President and the government condolences to the Family, Atsu’s twin sister and his brother,” he said.

Kudus dedicates goal to Atsu

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Mohammed Kudus has dedicated his first-ever freekick goal to late Ghana winger Christian Atsu.

Atsu, who was trapped under rubble for 12 days, sadly passed away following the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey on February 6, 2023.

His lifeless body was found on Saturday, February 18 and has immediately been transported to his native, Ghana.
