The UK's recruitment blacklist listing Ghana doesn't alter anything, according to GMA

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) asserts that it is unconcerned by the United Kingdom's choice to include Ghana among the 54 nations that businesses in the health and social care sectors should not aggressively seek to hire from.

The Association asserts that although people still have the option to hunt for work elsewhere, the UK's decision will simply discourage healthcare professionals from using mass recruiting organizations.

The UK government disclosed this in its most recent code of conduct for employing health and social care personnel abroad, which was published on the NHS Employers website.

The Code of Practice for International Recruitment advises against aggressively hiring individuals from specific underdeveloped countries, including Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Cote d'Ivoire.

The following countries, according to a news release on the NHS website, have a doctor, nurse, and midwife density that is lower than the worldwide median (48.6 per 10,000 people) and a UHC Service Coverage Index that is below 50.

In an interview with Citi News, Dr. Frank Serebour, President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), encouraged the government to start coming up with innovative ways to keep doctors in the country.

"There are still nations that are not on the list; you may still immigrate to the United States, Canada, and the other nations, so for me, not much has changed. "We should be putting our house in order to ensure that we are putting in the right measures to attract and retain our health professionals, so I don't think this changes anything," I said. "I think the pull factors are still there, people can be motivated to move out there and ply their trade."

The countries placed on the red list of 'No active recruitment' under the code are Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Kiribati, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Lesotho, Liberia.

The remaining nations are Timor-Leste, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, Republic of Yemen, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Federated States of Micronesia, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, United Republic of Tanzania, and Rwanda.
