Wike, speaking at a town hall with Igbo merchants in Port Harcourt, the state capital, stated that although Obi was not proclaimed the winner, his participation in the election ensured that a southerner would be elected president.

According to the governor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would have won the states where Obi recorded victories, retaining power in the North.

He is one of the five aggrieved PDP governors known as the G5 who refused to support their party's presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, due to an alleged violation of the party's zoning constitution.

Wike exhorted the traders to disregard the comments of the detectors and vote for the PDP in the March 18 elections for governor and state assembly.
