Today, the Kumawu by-election NDC will endorse Kwasi Amankwaa.

The Ashanti regional branch of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will confirm Kwasi Amankwa, also known as "Tom Cee," as the party's parliamentary candidate for the 23rd May 2023 by-election in the Sekyere Kumawu Constituency.

Kwasi Amankwa, direct nephew of Dr. Kwabena Duffour, NDC Presidential Candidate hopeful, is the solitary parliamentary candidate from the Sekeyere Kumawu constituency who picked and filed his nomination when the party opened nominations for its parliamentary primaries in the region.

His candidacy for the by-election has been approved by the party's elections committee, and he will be declared by acclamation.

The event is overseen by the Ashanti regional executives of the party, with assistance from the Sekyere Kumawu Constituency executives and other National executives.

Former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffour, a native of sekyere Kumawu District, Kwabena Duffour Junior Parliamentary candidate hopeful for Sekere Afram Plains Constituency, Former President John Dramani Mahama, Former Mayor of Kumasi, and NDC presidential hopeful Kojo Bonsu will also be in attendance from 10am to 5pm.

On 3 April 2023, the Speaker of the Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, proclaimed the seat of New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Kumawu, Philip Basoa, vacant.
The decision was made after the demise of 53-year-old Mr. Basoah on March 27, 2023.

On Sunday, April 23, 2023, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) selected Ernest Yaw Anim as the party's candidate for the by-election.
Independent candidate Kwaku Duah, who caused a significant upset in the 2020 general election by securing 11,698 votes, or 39% of the total votes, against the incumbent NPP's candidate Philip Basoah's 14,960 votes, or 51.11 percent, is also campaigning in the constituency to run for election.

This is despite the fact that the NPP and independent parliamentary candidate hopefuls hold a significant majority in the constituency based on the results of the 2020 election.

The NDC received 2,439 votes, representing 8.33% of valid ballots cast, but is confident that Kwasi Amoako, whom the party has dubbed "Kumawu's savior" due to his impressive track record in the district, will win on May 23, 2023.
