Two adolescent females have perished after falling into a galamsey pit in Sanfo-Aduam, Bekwai Municipality, Ashanti Region.

Alicia and Anita Asare, both 13 years old and pupils at the Sanfo-Aduam SDA primary school, were reportedly buried for hours before being rescued by members of the community. According to eyewitness accounts, the deceased were drowned in the ditch when they went swimming in a nearby river. A community source told OTEC News's Jacob Agyenim Boateng that the girls drowned on Friday, April 21, 2023, while on a swimming expedition with their companions.

On Tuesday, May 2, 2023, however, the two adolescents were laid to rest amid weeping from the community.

Hundreds of mourners who came to offer condolences to the family expressed concern over the number of abandoned galamsey trenches in the area.

In order to prevent residents from plunging into pits left in the community by illegal miners, they urged local authorities to cover all such holes.
