Bolgatanga Midwifery College holds matriculation for 222 fresher

The Bolgatanga Midwifery Training College, a premier and the only pure midwifery training institution in the Upper East Region on Wednesday held its 17th matriculation ceremony. This saw the school welcome and outdoor 222 fresh women desirous of becoming individuals who will help save mothers and their babies.

This remains a major concern because it is the desire of the college to attain tertiary status and become an institution of excellence in the training of health-related manpower.

On its path to attaining full tertiary status, the college is running the direct diploma in Midwifery program, a post-basic midwifery program for NAC/NAP, it is also a center in the region for top-up BSc degree programs in Midwifery the University for Development Studies (UDS) and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and University of Cape Coast (UCC).

Speaking during the matriculation ceremony, the Principal of the College, Amaliba Christiana decried the insufficiency of critical infrastructure including accommodation and this has forced all final-year students of the college out of the college’s hostels as she appeals for support.

“A large number of prospective students apply to this college yearly and each time, we are faced with the painful decision of having to turn down many applicants who otherwise are well qualified due to low academic staff and inadequate facilities, most especially accommodation of students.

I want to call on the support of all stakeholders in and outside of the region to help construct hostel facilities to resolve this pressing issue of accommodating students,” she appealed.

Speaking at the event, the Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu while congratulating the students indicated that he understands the college is one that has over the years held high standards in midwifery training. An achievement he hopes the students and staff will work to consolidate.

The figure was gotten from a total of 792 applicants that is 770 direct Midwifery applicants and 22 Post Nurse Assistant Clinical/Nurse Assistant Preventive (NAC/NAP) applicants. This translates into 200 direct applicants and 22 post-NAC/NAP applicants gaining admission.

Beyond admitting fresh students, authorities of the school are worried about inadequate infrastructure and land space to expand accommodation and classroom structures to admit more students.
