40 Year Old Man Remanded By Court For Insulting Prez Akufo-Addo

A court in Accra has remanded a 40-year-old tile setter to police custody for insulting President Nana Akuffo-Addo.

Raphael Okoe Ankrah, also known as Okoe Killer, was arrested after police discovered a video he had posted to social media in which he used extremely offensive language to describe the President.

Since then, he has pled not guilty to offensive conduct conducive to peace violations.

Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah presided over the court that ordered Ankrah's return on May 30, 2023.

ASP Maxwell Oppong informed the court that Ankrah resided in Jamestown.

He stated that on May 15, 2023, the Police discovered a viral video of an Ankrah denigrating the President.

The police had to arrest Ankrah, according to ASP Oppong, because the video was not only offensive but had also angered and agitated the public.

The Police Intelligence Directorate traced down Ankrah and apprehended him in Accra's James Town.

According to the prosecution, Ankrah acknowledged the offense in his investigation cautioned statement and was charged accordingly.

Ankrah's defense attorney, Mr. Yaw Dankwa, who requested bail for the accused, stated that the allegation did not support the facts, which he characterized as political, because his client denied the crime upon his arrest.

He suggested that the video could have been manipulated, and that his client was innocent of the allegations until it was presented and examined in court.

Mr. Dankwa stated that Ankrah, a "responsible father" with a two-week-old infant, was not a flight danger.

He stated that Ankrah had "people of substance" willing to serve as his sureties.

In opposition to parole, the prosecution urged the court to commit the defendant to a psychiatric hospital after he told police he was not in his right mind.

Based on Ankrah's statements in the video, ASP Oppong stated that he would be safer in police custody because his life was in peril in his community.

On him not being a flight risk, the prosecution stated that Ankrah was a squatter residing in an unfinished building with no fixed place of residence, whereas Ankrah's attorney stated that there were no unfinished buildings in James Town.
