6 Suspects Remanded Over Death Of Family Head

According to a May 18, 2023 article in The Chronicles, the six individuals are George Martey, 67, a farmer; Nelson Anum Martey, 59, a mechanic; and Nii Marteye Martey Nathaniel, 39, a businessperson.

The court presided by Her Ladyship Siran Mahama remanded Michael Martey Morrison, 35, a merchant; Thomas Martey, 34, a freelance writer; and Daniel Martey, 35, a welder. All three are Adjumador residents.

According to the report, when presenting the summary facts to the court, the prosecutor stated that the complainant, Martey Samuel Mensah, is a building contractor and that the deceased, aged 70, was a Pensioner who resided in his eight-bedroom, single-family home in Adjumador.

The complainant, the accused, and the deceased are all members of the Changha Martey Family of Adjumador, with the deceased serving as the patriarch of the family.

According to the report, one of the deceased's siblings, George Martey, was unhappy with his leadership of the family.

As a consequence, the accused has been unjustifiably abusing and threatening the deceased. The deceased shared a room with his pharmacy assistant daughter, Judith Merley Martey, age 27.

The newspaper went on to report that on November 1, 2022, during the day, all of the defendants, with the exception of Daniel Martey and the witnesses Elizabeth Tetteh and Samuel Narh, appeared before the Tema Community 8 Police regarding a plot of land that was the subject of an investigation involving the defendants and the witnesses.

During an investigation by the Community 8 police station, George Martey identified himself as the patriarch of the Changha Martey Family of Adjumador.

Elizabeth Tetteh, the case's witness, disclosed that the deceased, and not George Martey, was the family patriarch. This resulted in interactions between them.

The police scheduled them for a second meeting on November 4, 2022, during which George must produce his deceased family chief, Charles Martey Odam.

The newspaper detailed the sequence of events that led to the murder and subsequent arrest of the six individuals listed below.

Michael Martey Morrison called the complainant on November 1, 2022, in the afternoon, to express his displeasure with the family headship and demand a meeting with the complainant and the deceased.

Judith Martey was awakened by the sound of a gunshot at 1:00 a.m. on November 2, 2022, but she did not know from which direction the gun was discharged.

She awoke at 4:00 a.m., the typical time she began her daily duties and prepared to take her son to school before continuing to her place of employment, Afienya.

At approximately 11:00 a.m. on the same day, Judith received a phone call from her uncle, Quarshie Isaac Martey, informing her that her father's (deceased) masons had gone to the house to work but were unable to locate him.

Both Judith and Isaac rushed home, opened the dead man's door, and discovered his lifeless corpse in a pool of blood by his bed.

A complaint was filed, and an investigation was launched. Two expended cartridges were discovered behind the bedroom window of the deceased.

The preliminary police investigation revealed that the decedent's death was the result of a dispute over who should become the family patriarch.

Crime scene experts who visited the crime scene collected fingerprints and other evidence that has yet to be matched to the suspects.
