Political and social activist, Kwame A-Plus has reacted to the recent directive issued by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to Akonta Mining Company to halt operations. It is believed that such a mining company belongs to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Chairman Wontumi.
According to the report, Akonta Mining Limited has a mining lease to undertake mining operations in some parts of Samreboi, outside the Forest Reserve. However, the company has no mineral right to undertake any mining operations in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve. They have therefore been asked to stop operations in that forest reserve.
Kwame A-Plus has reacted to this and has sent a simple message to the Ministry. According to him, if the company is mining illegally, why don't they arrest them? He added that other illegal miners have been arrested for doing similar acts. He believes that justice must be served equally.
"If they are mining illegally in a forest reserve why don’t you arrest them? If ordinary people were mining you’d have gone there to shoot them. This company belongs to an NPP chairman so they should halt" he said.
Despite the government's directives against illegal mining activities in the country, some persons do find ways and means to mine in the country. Due to this, the nature of various water bodies in the country is unsafe to use. A lot of trees have been cut down because of these illegal mining activities.
