After two cousins were caught doing the act, they went through a ritual purification to remove the "generational curses" that had been placed on them.
Sam Odaka, 47, and Joyce Aaca, 44, were caught in the act by one of the clan enforcers at 2 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, in Kumi Sub-County, where they were publicly ridiculed.
After they had been cleansed according to local custom, the two were lashed by the authorities and given a goat to pay their fine.
The Inomu Ikomion believe that the ritualists must host a feast to atone for their sins after witnessing the "sinners" in their most vulnerable state.
The two were released after being escorted into a grass kiln where a fire was set.
The clan chief, John Charles Omongole, said the grass kiln is used to purify incest victims.
If the two had come out of the kiln and started running the same way, he remarked, it would prove that they had not changed their minds. Thus, a second kiln would need to be installed.
Results indicated that the couple's relationship began in the year 2022.
Following the ceremony, both parties were required to sign a promise saying they would not repeat the act.
