CODEO Calls For Free And Fair Elections At Assin North

The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) will send 15 observers to the impending by-election in the Assin North constituency of the Central Region on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.

CODEO aims to assure a transparent, free, fair, and peaceful election in accordance with its mandate to encourage active citizen participation in the electoral process and to assist the Electoral Commission.

According to a statement published on Friday, CODEO intends to station thirteen observers at specific polling stations within twelve carefully selected electoral districts. In addition, on election day, two roaming observers will monitor the proceedings, with one concentrating on the activities at the collation center. These observers will carefully witness the setup of polling stations, voting procedures, and the counting process. Throughout the day, the observers will document and report any incidents they observe.

After the Supreme Court invalidated Mr. James Gyakye Quayson's election to the National Democratic Congress in the 2020 elections and declared the seat vacant, the by-election became necessary. As the by-election nears, there are three candidates contending for the vacant seat. Charles Opoku represents the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernice Enyonam Sefenu represents the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), and James Gyakye Quayson seeks re-election on behalf of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

CODEO's deployment of observers in Assin North demonstrates its dedication to assuring a transparent and credible electoral process. CODEO endeavors to promote democratic values and uphold the principles of fairness and accountability in Ghana's electoral system by actively monitoring the by-election.
