Court Sentence Gregory Afoko's Friend Asabke To Death By Hanging

Gregory Afoko's trial will begin from beginning, and Hanson Agyemang has been sentenced to death by hanging. 4 hours prior

Gregory Afoko, who has been on trial for over six years for the murder of the late Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Adams Mahama, has been retried by an Accra high court.

Asabke Alangdi, the second accused, has been sentenced to death by hanging.

This is due to the fact that Gregory Afoko was found not guilty by a jury verdict of 4-3 on both the murder and conspiracy to commit murder offenses.

However, the jury rendered a unanimous verdict on the charge of murder conspiracy against the second defendant, Asabke Alangdi.

The jury then rendered a verdict of not guilty, 4-3, on the second defendant's murder charge.

Background
On May 20, 2015, in front of his home in Bolgatanga, a substance believed to be acid was poured on Alhaji Adams Mahama, causing him grievous bodily injuries.

Later, he succumbed to his wounds at the Bolgatanga General Hospital.

Alangdi allegedly fled Ghana, leaving Afoko as the sole defendant initially standing trial.

As a result of Alangdi's detention, the Attorney General (AG) filed a nolle prosequi on January 28, 2019, ending more than three years of trial proceedings.

Afoko challenged the nolle prosequi by submitting a case with the Supreme Court, but on June 19, 2019, the apex court dismissed the case because Afoko failed to demonstrate that the nolle prosequi was capricious, unfair, and arbitrary.

Prosecution's evidence
According to the facts of the case, Mr. Paul Afoko, Gregory's brother, and Mr. Kwabena Agyepong, National Chairman and General Secretary of the NPP, respectively, arrived in Bolgatanga on May 14, 2015.

The prosecution claimed that Adams Mahama organized thugs to violently assault the two, preventing them from meeting at the Azumsolon Guest House. They were accused of campaigning against the flag bearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and not informing Mahama of the meeting.

According to the prosecution, the situation was later brought under control by the police, and Gregory, who was agitated at the time, confronted Mahama before being driven away by thugs.

a separate entity
The facts also indicated that Gregory and Asabke Alangdi formed a second youth organization in an effort to protect individuals perceived to be opposed to Nana Akufo-Addo.

It was alleged that Gregory and Alangdi held a series of meetings with the youth, and that on May 20, 2015, they set up an ambush at Mahama's residence using a substance believed to be acid.

"At 11:10 p.m., Mahama returned home in his pickup truck with the license plate number NR 754-14. Upon parking in front of his residence, Gregory and Asabke approached and signaled him to roll down the window.

"Mahama identified the suspects as party members and lowered the window to communicate with them. The suspects poured a substance, believed to be acid, on his head, face, and other areas of his body before fleeing on a motorcycle.

"Mahama began yelling for help, and his wife, Hajia Zenabu Adams, rushed to his aid and was able to pull him from the vehicle," according to the prosecution.
