Courts Empty As JUSAG Begins Strike

The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has abandoned courts throughout the nation as a result of industrial action.

Many people are pondering when the strike will end, which has led to the emptiness of truck parking lots.

JUSAG leaders summoned members to an emergency meeting on Wednesday afternoon, ostensibly to proclaim an indefinite strike, after the May 19 deadline for government to respond to demands for the approval of salary increases and payment of arrears dating back to January 2023.

According to the association, it had previously written to President Nana Akufo-Addo urging him to ratify the Judicial Council's recommendation for a review of salaries and allowances for Judicial Service employees in accordance with Article 149 of the 1992 Ghanaian Constitution.

JUSAG also complained about the removal of the Cost of Living Allowance in December 2022, citing the country's economic woes, and concluded that its members had demonstrated sufficient forbearance.

The action's repercussions are already being felt only hours after its implementation.

A number of individuals who were present in court waiting for their cases to be called expressed anxiety.

In the meantime, JUSAG is urging the government to cease intimidating court personnel by threatening to open the courts.
