ECG Reconnects Upper West Regional Hospital After Negotiation

After negotiations, ECG reconnects Upper West Regional hospital
After being disconnected from the national electricity grid for several hours due to a GH20 million debt owed to the Northern Electricity Department company of the Volta River Authority (VRA/NEDco), the Upper West regional hospital has been reconnected so that the power provider and the facility can negotiate payment terms.

The regional hospital is among a number of institutions, including the Wa Technical University, that have been disconnected as the VRA/NEDco launches a revenue mobilization campaign to collect a GH50 million debt from its Upper West customers.

' Latif Mahama reported on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, that the VRA Northern Electricity Department initiated a revenue mobilization exercise to recover more than GH50 million owed by public/private institutions and individuals in the Upper West region.

Robert Amesiya, the medical director of the Upper west regional hospital, lamented the government's failure to fulfill its financial obligations to the facility.

The regional medical director attributed the high electricity costs to the ultramodern 160-bed hospital's design.

The upper west regional hospital is the primary referral center for the region's 190,000 residents.

Even though the hospital has been reconnected to the national grid, the administration is pleading for government aid to save the facility, as the monthly electricity bill of GH1.2 is significantly higher than the hospital's monthly revenue.
