GBC Employees To Repay One Year Unlawfully Paid Allowances

Ing. Ben Arthur, chief executive officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), has written to the Controller and Accountant-General to request that certain employees of state broadcasters return allegedly unlawfully paid allowances.

During one year, the affected employees allegedly received a total of GH2,084,020 in "unearned" allowances.

According to the letter, the employees did not qualify for the allowances, so they should not have been paid.

This information became accessible as a result of the Commission's nationwide payroll monitoring.

"As part of the payroll monitoring exercise, FWSC has discovered that some GBC employees are currently receiving improper allowances," the letter stated.

Employees receiving the Vehicle Maintenance Allowance and the GBC Computer Special Allowance are affected.

Engineer Arthur believes that these individuals should no longer be compensated.

Following the transition of GBC employees to the Single Spine compensation Structure, for instance, the base compensation was consolidated.

GBC employees stage a covert protest against the "sale of channels" and severance benefits.

In violation of Category 4 Allowances, some personnel below the director level are allegedly receiving allowances for items such as rent, domestic servant housekeeper, lodging, entertainment, and utilities.

"This item should be terminated and removed from payroll."

The situation is reportedly prompting GBC employees to become agitated.
