GOOD NEWS : Bui Sugar Factory To Start Operating After Agreement With Authorities And Chinese Investors

The Bui Power Authority (BPA) has leased a portion of its acquired land to Bui Sugar Factory Limited for the production of 60,000 tons of sugar annually to supplement the nation's sugar requirements.

The Bui Sugar Factory Limited is located in Fawoman, Banda District, Bono Region, and has already established a sugarcane plantation to supply the factory with raw materials for sugar production.

Last week, the Authority's chief executive officer, Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, led the Bono regional minister, Justina Owusu Banahene, around the sugarcane plantation as part of a working tour of the Banda District.

According to Dzamesi, the Bui Sugar Factory Limited is the consequence of an agreement between the Authority and Chinese investors to produce 60,000 tons of sugar on 13,000 acres of land."As of today, 250 acres of land have already been used to plant sugarcane in preparation for the factory's completion.

In addition, he stated that the Bui Sugar Factory is part of the government's industrialization initiative, One District, One Factory (1D1F), and that the plantation has employed approximately 500 weekly-paid community members.

"When the factory begins full production, it is anticipated that 1,500 direct jobs and 500,000 indirect jobs will be created for youth," he added. The company's managing director, Yan Wai Hua, explained that in order to have year-round production and not run out of raw materials due to erratic weather, the company has excavated dams to irrigate the sugar-cane farms to ensure uninterrupted production.Regional Minister Justina Owusu Banahene lauded the foresight of the Bui Power Authority in forming a partnership with the Bui Sugar factory limited, which she believes will significantly reduce the country's high sugar imports.
