Gospel musician Obaapa Christy Explains Why She Can't Perform For Free

Makeup is difficult, and costumes are expensive - Obaapa Christy, a gospel star, explains why she cannot perform for free.
A renowned Ghanaian gospel artist has discussed the difficulties of being a performer in the music industry, disclosing that she charges for her performances due to the costs associated with preparing for shows.

The award-winning singer explained in a recent interview that the cost of makeup and costumes alone can be significant, and that these expenses are frequently neglected by those outside the industry.

"From the moment I began singing and conducting interviews, I've been asked if I charge before performances...'And I responded that I do charge, to which they responded, "As a Christian, why?" Makeup is expensive, as is my costume to look decent, because I can't wear it anywhere else after today and I also have to eat.

Herein lies our mission "Even the Bible states that those who work for the Lord receive a portion of their earnings," she noted.

Obaapa Christy's remarks cast light on the often-overlooked expenses performers incur, especially when it comes to looking their best offstage.

Makeup, hairstyles, and costumes are essential components of a performance, and they can be expensive.

"Sister," she said to MzGee, "when you're finished you'll receive your monthly remuneration, so if you take it as 'I'm a Christian, so when a pastor calls me I'm obligated to go and sing,' then just say 'God bless you' and leave, that's wrong,'" she said.

She asserted that other artists in the past had taken a similar course of action and are presently hesitant to charge for their services.

"At first, individuals stated that they would perform for free, but now, when they want to charge, they will be reminded of their previous statements.

She emphasized, "I believe we should be honest with ourselves, especially if it does not offend God."

In addition, the gospel star emphasized that her performance fees reflect not only these costs, but also the time and effort she invests in putting on a memorable show for her admirers.
