Just In : NPP Opens Nominations For Assin North By-Elections

Today, May 31, 2023, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will open nominations for the impending by-election in Assin North.

At its Steering Committee (SC) meeting on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, the decision was made and the dates for the parliamentary primary were announced.

The deadline for nominations is Thursday, June 1, 2023, and the election is scheduled for Wednesday, June 7, 2023.

Statement signed by General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua "The Party has also authorized detailed Rules and Regulations for the conduct of the parliamentary primary election, which will be made available to all interested parties. However, Nomination Forms will be available for purchase from the Constituency Party Office."

Following a letter from the Clerk of Parliament, Cyril Kwabena Oteng Nsiah, informing the Electoral Commission (EC) of a vacancy in the Assin North Constituency, this notice is being issued.

In a memo to the Electoral Commission, the Clerk stated, "In the exercise of the power conferred upon and the duty imposed upon the Clerk to Parliament by section 3 of the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana (Amendment) Act, 1996 (Act 527), I, CYRIL KWABENA OTENG NSIAH, Clerk to Parliament do hereby formally notify you of the occurrence of a vacancy in the Assin North Constituency necessitated by the judgment of The Electoral Commission of Ghana and the Attorney General kindly request that you take the necessary legal action."

The Supreme Court ruled that James Gyakye Quayson's election as Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North in the Central Region was unconstitutional.

A seven-member tribunal of the Supreme Court ruled unanimously on Wednesday morning, May 17, 2023, that Mr. Quayson's name should be removed from the list of MPs.

The court determined that Mr. Quayson's election violated Article 94(2)(a) of the 1992 Constitution because, at the time he filed to run for office, he was ineligible to be elected as a legislator because he had not renounced his dual citizenship.
