Just In : Supreme Court Faces NDC's Kpessa-Whyte For His

The Supreme Court has determined that Whyte is culpable of court contempt. Initially, he pled not guilty to the charge of scandalizing the court. However, he later changed his plea to guilty with an explanation, and then pleaded guilty.

Based on his own admission of guilt, a panel of five judges headed by Justice Mariama Owusu convicted Professor Kpessa-Whyte. After considering Dr. Justice Srem Sai's request for leniency, the court is presently engaged in private discussions to determine the appropriate punishment.

The attorney for Professor Kpessa-Whyte asked the court to have mercy on his client, emphasizing that he has apologized and retracted his contemptuous remarks.

Dr. Kpessa-Whyte made his controversial remarks in a recent tweet in which he stated that the Supreme Court was becoming a "Stupid Court."

In addition, he criticized the current state of the judiciary, accusing it of being biased and lacking common sense.

Shortly after the Supreme Court decided to order the removal of NDC MP James Gyakye Quayson's name from Parliament's records due to procedural violations during his nomination and election in 2020, these tweets were sent out.

Following the tweet, Dr. Kpessa-Whyte received questions about his statement, especially in relation to Ghana's judiciary.

He clarified that his remarks were influenced by global events, including those in the United States, and did not refer specifically to the Ghanaian judiciary.

As a result of his remarks, the Supreme Court has summoned Dr. Kpessa-Whyte, initiating a procedure in which he must provide a valid explanation for his allegedly contemptuous remark.
