Kumawu By-Election : PPP Declares Support For Independent Candidate

Mr Kwaku Duah is an independent candidate for the impending by-election in the Ashanti Region's Kumawu Constituency. The Progressive People's Party (PPP) has declared its support for Mr Duah.

Mr. Duah ran as an independent candidate in the 2020 Kumawu parliamentary election but lost.

In a statement signed by Nana Ofori Owusu, National Chairman of the PPP, it was stated that Mr. Duah "is the only known credible independent parliamentary candidate" in the upcoming by-election.

Party members were encouraged to vote for him.

"The Party believes Ghana requires an independent voice in Parliament to represent Ghanaians, and that Hon. Kwaku Duah is the only credible, competent, and very excellent leader to represent the people of Kumawu in Parliament since 2020.

"We, therefore, urge all eligible voters and party members in Kumawu to disregard any form of intimidation, threats, and manipulations and turn out in large numbers to vote for Hon. Kwaku Duah on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, for change and development in the area," read the statement.

The PPP urged the citizens of Kumawu to "vote for change" in order to "send the proper message to the nation."

Mr. Philip Basoah, the former Kumawu representative, passed away in March of this year, necessitating the by-election.

In accordance with Article 112 (5) of the amended Constitution, the Electoral Commission (EC) has set the election date for May 23, 2023.

From 2 to 5 May 2023, the Commission is anticipated to receive nominations from prospective candidates.

Election filing expenses have been set by the EC at GHC10,000
