Owusu Bempah Reveals Plans Of NDC Ahead Of Assin North By-Elections

Ernest Owusu Bempah, Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of employing subpar tactics in the run-up to the by-election in Assin North.

He asserted that the NDC has been spreading falsehoods for poor political gain.

Speaking on the Accra-based radio station Original FM, he stated, "It is quite disturbing that the NDC has come to Assin North to deceive and engage in dialogue by employing a variety of communist inferior strategies. While this may be advantageous for their politics at the moment, it hurts and makes it more difficult for our descendants' democracy to continue once we are gone." Assin North by-election is intended to be marred by violence.

He asserted that the NPP has dispatched all of its representatives who are aggressively seeking ballots on the ground.

"The NPP is actively immersed in grassroots organizing. Our entire national and regional executive teams are headquartered here. They are organizing and interacting at the location this morning. We will debunk all of the falsehoods propagated by the NDC. As if deceptions are a significant component of politics. "The NDC is abandoning reasoned discourse and speaking outright lies and falsehoods," he declared.

The 2020 election of Quayson as a Member of Parliament was ruled unconstitutional by a unanimous seven-member panel of the Supreme Court, necessitating a by-election.

The court ruled that Parliament must remove the name of the first defendant (James Gyakye Quayson) from the Assin North Constituency Member of Parliament list.

The court ruled that the entire process leading to Quayson's election, including the submission of nomination forms, the election, and the swearing-in, violated Article 94(2)(a) of the 1992 Constitution, which prohibits a person with dual citizenship from running for office as a Member of Parliament.

The court was of the opinion that at the time Quayson filed his nomination papers in October 2020 to run for the Assin North seat, he had not renounced his Canadian citizenship and therefore was not qualified under Article 94(2)(a) of the Constitution.

In light of this, the court concluded that the Electoral Commission (EC) also violated Article 94(2)(a) of the Constitution by allowing Mr. Quayson to run for office.
