Salary Of Nurses and Midwives In Ghana, 2023

Numerous high school graduates are interested in enrolling in a tertiary nursing or midwifery program, but first want to know their salary structure.

Similar to other public occupations in Ghana, such as teaching and law enforcement, Nurses and Midwives are compensated according to their ranks or years of experience.

Senior nurses are paid more than their junior counterparts. Additionally, not all newly hired nurses accept the same salary. On their certificates, some have a degree while others have a diploma.

In this article, we will examine the salaries of Ghanaian nurses and midwives as of 2023.

This is the average starting salary for newly employed nurses.

Certified nurses earn GHS 1,300 per month.

Diploma nurses earn between GHS 1,600 and GHS 1,800 per month.

Graduates earn between GHS 2,000 and GHS 2,200 per month.

However, private sector salaries do not adhere to a specific structure.

The above salary may not be sufficient for nurses and midwives to subsist on a monthly basis. Nonetheless, they also receive monthly and annual allowances from the government.

In Ghana, registered nurses' salaries are based on their level of education, whether they hold a certificate, diploma, or degree. Registered nurses in Ghana earn between GHS21,000.00 and GHS28,800 annually on average. However, only after-tax deductions apply. The exorbitant cost of living and utilities has compelled many nurses in Ghana to take on a second job.

Nursing Duties in Ghana

Patients are treated with a variety of medications and therapies.
Administer medications, document patient conditions, and monitor dosages.

Monitor and document the patient's condition, vital signs, recovery progress, and adverse drug reactions.
Monitored patient vital signs following surgery, administered medications, and managed medical equipment.
To enhance the mental and physical health of patients, develop care plans containing effective nursing interventions.

Patients should be immunized against influenza and pneumonia to safeguard vulnerable populations from deadly diseases.

Coordinate care with physicians and other clinical personnel in order to prepare for treatment, implement interventions, and improve continuity of care in order to provide comprehensive services.
Respond to patient inquiries and provide take-home materials for further study.

Assist with patient manual handling and transfer in accordance with hospital policy.
Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patient care.
Educate patients and family members, as appropriate, about health promotion and disease prevention.
Perform final rites for deceased patients and provide relatives/caregivers with pertinent information.

Assist the ward manager/unit in-charge in promoting the rights of patients/clients and preserving the confidentiality and dignity of patients/clients and personnel.
Perform additional official responsibilities assigned by the Ward Manager or Unit Supervisor.
Participating in meetings, conferences, and ideation sessions.

Respond promptly to requests to clean and disinfect areas affected by accidents.
