Suspected Mobile Phone Thief Arrested At Late Basoah's Funeral In Kumawu

A man in his late 30s was apprehended by police in Kumawu, Ashanti Region, for allegedly stealing five mobile phones during a church service at the interment of the late Kumawu Constituency Member of Parliament, the Honorable Philip Atta Basoah.

The unidentified suspect was taken to police custody after allegedly being caught stealing a smartphone from one of the mourners at the funeral.

"In an interview with OTEC News' Jacob Agyenim Boateng, one of the victims, Mary Akuoko, who claimed to have lost two smart phones at the funeral, said she saw the suspect holding her bag as she fought her way through the crowd to see the late MP who had been laid to rest."

"I had a shady feeling about the man, so I checked my bag, only to discover that my two smart phones were missing."

"I reported the man to the police and pointed him out, and they later observed him stealing a phone from another person, confirming my suspicion."

Subsequently, he was apprehended, and a search of his person revealed five phones, including my own.

The suspect has since been brought into custody by police in Kumawu, where he is assisting with investigations.

The politician Philip Basoah passed away on March 27, 2023.

Nonetheless, he was laid to rest on Saturday, May 20, 2023.

A government delegation led by Ghana's vice president, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, attended the funeral to offer condolences to the family.

Other prominent members of the governing New Patriotic Party NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress NDC attended the funeral to show their support for the family.
