The Electoral Commission (EC) has reported that the turnout for the by-election in the Assin North Constituency was significantly high.

Dr. Serebuor Quaicoe, director of elections, told the media that polling stations documented over 50 percent voter turnout before noon.

"As of now, almost all of the centers I've visited have registered a participation rate of 50%, so the turnout is very high. "You could see that people are still waiting in line," he stated.

At least 41,168 electors in 99 polling locations are participating in the election for the area's representative.

The seat became vacant after the Supreme Court declared null and invalid the procedures that led to the election of the controversial incumbent member of parliament, James Gyakye Quayson, on grounds of dual citizenship.

Mr. Quayson, who is running for the seat once more, faces opposition from Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party and Bernice Enyonam Senenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).

Some voters gathered at the Endwa Community Center, Catholic Primary School, and Asempaneye Catholic JHS polling stations around 4:00 a.m. to participate in the 7 a.m. election.

Mr. Quaicoe believes that the Electoral Commission could register one of the highest voter turnouts in recent history in a by-election that is notorious for having a low voter .
He stated, "I do not wish to predict, but it appears that we will have one of the highest voter turnouts in the Assin North."

Mr. Quaicoe attributes the high voter turnout to the political parties' effective campaigning, the increased police presence and patrols that ensured adequate security for the electorate, the media, and the proactive Electoral Commission.

This is what occurs when political parties engage in appropriate campaigning rather than engaging in mutual attacks. If you approach the people with a persuasive message, they will respond."

"I will also give a portion of the credit to the authorities, as they have been everywhere. Therefore, you recognize that you can conduct business without fear of intimidation."

"The media and the Electoral Commission are also working," he noted.
