WATCH : Ultramodern Health Infrastructure Abandoned At Akatsi

At the Akatsi South Municipal Hospital, the doctor's and nurses' bungalows, boys' quarters, operating room, and morgue are on the verge of destruction.

The initiative, which was initiated in 2012 under the administration of John Mahama's National Democratic Congress, has since been abandoned.

Mr. Mawuli Asimenu, the hospital's administrator, disclosed this during a visit by members of the Volta and Oti Chapter of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) to assess the hospital's challenges.

Mr. Asimenu stated that the abandoned project is overgrown with vegetation and has been neglected for years, with the weather dictating the rate of deterioration.

These initiatives existed before the preponderance of health care professionals were transferred to the hospital.

Dr. Julius Patamia, the Volta and Oti Regional Secretary of the GMA, explained after the tour that the purpose of the visit was to assess the extent of the fire-related damage the hospital sustained a few months ago.

He stated that it was their responsibility to continue monitoring and advocating for the welfare of their members and their working conditions.

Dr. Patamia disclosed that the majority of hospital facilities posed a risk to the employees.
"The primary issue here is inadequate housing, and I cannot believe that this large institution lacks a morgue. Urgent action is required in this regard."

Dr. Patamia also cautioned the general public against politicizing the project, stating that "the health of our people in the Municipality is more important than politics."

He explained that the provision of housing for physicians and other health care professionals at the hospital would help to attract more health care professionals as well as fulfill the need to manage medical emergencies.

Dr. Patamia urged the government to conclude the hospital facilities that had been abandoned.
A subsequent visit by the Ghana News Agency to the construction site revealed that portions of the building, which is approximately 75% complete, were deteriorating at an accelerated rate.
