We Are No More In The Era Where Only Akan(s) Had To Be Flagbearer Of NPP - Deputy Trade Minister

Michael Okyere Baafi, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, has called for a change in the current method of selecting New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidates.

He stated that the era in which Akans were the exclusive candidates for the party's leadership must end.

The Honorable Baafi, who is also the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, stated that it is now time for other tribes to lead the party as presidential candidates and accede to the presidency.

Mr. Okyere Baafi explained that because the NPP is comprised of members from various ethnic groups and religions, it is suitable for anyone qualified to lead the party, regardless of their heritage.

"What I mean to say is that Ghana is comprised of more than a single community, given its current trajectory. Ghana is home to Ashantes, Ewes, Gas, Krobos, and Bonos, among others. Some of these tribes are NPP members, which implies that the era in which only Akans led the party has ended. Now we need people from each of these tribes to head the party and run for president," said Okyere Baafi.

The honorable Michael Okyere Baafi made these remarks at the official inauguration of "Women Delegates For Bawumia" in Koforidua, the regional capital of the Eastern region.

Okyere Baafi criticized as deceitful and implausible the argument that a Muslim cannot become president because Ghana is predominantly Christian.

"They claim Ghana is a Christian nation, so some argue that a Muslim cannot lead Ghana. On this topic, I will comment briefly. Mr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the only candidate in the election who is eligible to be president. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the only aspirant with the ability to lead the party to victory."

He continued, "some Christians who wish to delude you into believing that they are the majority and therefore will not vote for a Muslim must turn their attention to Nigeria. The majority religion in Nigeria is Islam, but the president is Christian. The majority religion in Senegal is Islam, but the president is a Christian. Listen very well ! A nation with numerous communities implies that anyone could become president in the future.

According to him, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has dispelled the misconception that Muslims cannot fellowship with Christians in church and has established a benchmark for every Muslim who aspires to be president.
