5 arrested over attack on policeman at Kumawu

On April 8, 2023, a video of civilians assaulting a police officer has emerged, depicting a scuffle between the occupants of a taxi and a policeman in which the civilians attempted to seize the officer's gun.

The incident occurred on April 7 around 4 pm in the Kumawu district of the Ashanti region, according to William Evans Nkum, who has been investigating the situation.

The policeman in the video, identified as Corporal Sylvester Berhene, was conducting a search of the taxi's trunk as part of his patrol duties when the civilians allegedly attacked him.

A member of the patrol team, in an audio, reported that they found a gun and a knife in a sack during the search, but it is not clear whether the suspects were hunters or not.

The taxi had seven occupants, and three of them, Edward Boateng (20), Evans Addo (20), and Yaw Kusi (22), were arrested on the spot. Two others, Michael Owusu (28) and Yaw Boateng (20), were later apprehended by the surveillance team after fleeing the scene.

The suspects are all in police custody, with two of the attackers still at large. Berhene suffered injuries during the altercation.
