Akufo-Addo must resign for failing to fight galamsey – Jamal Seidu

A lawyer and ex-military captain, Jamal Tonzua Seidu, has called for the resignation of Ghanaian President Akufo-Addo over what he sees as the president's failure to combat illegal mining in the country.

Seidu argues that under Article 69 of the constitution, the conduct of the president should not undermine the safety of citizens, the country's economic welfare, or security. According to Seidu, the government's approach to curbing illegal mining has been flawed from the start, and the president has not lived up to expectations. Seidu believes that the policies created to combat illegal mining need to be formulated correctly to make an impact.

Additionally, Bezaba Yalley, an Assistant Lecturer at the Mining Engineering Department of the University of Mines and Technology, believes that the complicated procedures involved in securing mining lands are a significant factor contributing to the prevalence of illegal mining activities.

She asserts that the application process is unnecessarily time-consuming and discourages individuals who want to comply with the law. Yalley believes that the system itself promotes illegal mining, and even those who want to follow the law are discouraged from doing so.
