Akufo-Addo’s mismanaged first term cause of economic woes – NPP Flagbearer hopeful

Kwadwo Poku, a prospective candidate for the leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), claims that President Akufo-Addo's tenure has been the worst since he failed to properly plan his first term.

He argues that every government should spend the first four years planning and building the country in order to benefit from the next four years.

President Akufo-Addo rather went on a spending spree in his first four years to impress Ghanaians, only to make Ghanaians suffer in the second four years of his administration, according to Mr Poku, who was speaking with Francis Abban on Morning Starr on Tuesday.

"Well, you didn't see anything in the first four years of President Kufuor's administration. The work done at the beginning of President Kufuor's administration paid off because we saw an economic recovery at the end of his administration. The government always wants to do another four years because the effort you put in the first four years shows up in the next four years.”

"The country was in HIPC from 2001 to 2004, but things started to improve during Kufuor's second term. We are in this predicament now because the things that needed to be done between 2017 and 2020 were not done. I told Nana Addo when he came in 2017 that we needed authority because the economy was terrible. All the promises Nana Addo made in his manifesto should be put on hold,” according to Mr Poku.

“Inform Ghanaians that we don't have enough to fulfil all our promises," he continued. “So we are going to cut back while maintaining policies that will stimulate the economy and reduce expenditure. Then we will do what we promise to do in the future. That didn't happen; instead we went on a spending spree and fulfilled all our promises. That is the problem we face now, because we did not find a solution in the first four years.”
