Anti-Gay Bill: Akufo-Addo goofed in his comment to Kamala Harris – Sam George

According to Samuel Nartey George, a member of parliament for Ningo Prampram, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo missed an opportunity to make it plain that Ghana will not tolerate any show of homosexuality during his meeting with US Vice President Kamala Harris.

He claimed that the President made a goofed.

Sam George, one of the sponsors of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-Gay Bill, said the following on the News 360 with Martin Asiedu Darteh on TV3 on Monday, March 27:

First, I thought President Akufo-Addo would have used this opportunity to send a clear message to the world and the country that his fidelity is to the Ghanaian people. He would have made it quite obvious that Ghana will not tolerate any manifestations of homosexuality if he had acted in accordance with the 1992 Constitution, which he swore an oath to preserve.

Second, I anticipated that he would have demonstrated that he was on top of his brief because it was understood that this would be a topic. President Akufo-Addo erred and failed on the two issues.

The President has no idea what he's talking about; the Bill hasn't altered all that much; it's still as strict and severe as it was. The Bill's aim and main focus have remained constant.

At the time of his remarks, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had distanced himself from the Anti-Gay Law.

The anti-gay bill, which is being proposed as a Private Members' Bill, is anticipated to make some homosexual practises in Ghana illegal.

President Akufo-Addo responded to a query that was directed at him at the Jubilee House on Monday, March 27, when US Vice President Kamala Harris visited him. He confirmed that the bill is presently before Parliament, which will decide on it, but that the majority of its provisions are still being adjusted.

The statement that there is legislation in Ghana to that effect is not accurate," he said. It hasn't been passed.

He continued, Parliament is dealing with it, and I will enter at the conclusion of the process.

Vice President Harris emphasized how passionately she believes that it is crucial to support and fight for the cause of human rights, especially the rights of LGBTQ people.

For the American media who are here, you know that much of my career has been devoted to addressing human rights issues, equality issues throughout the world, including as well as the LGBTQ community, and I feel very strongly about the importance of supporting freedom and supporting and fighting for quality among all people.
